This is not a workshop, a course, a webinar series, a first-readers’ group, or anything whose purpose is to change what you have written or how you write. Nor is it about the logistics of finding representation or getting published.
Write Awhile is about something more fundamental to the practice: Persistence, the one quality all writers must have to stay writers.
When you sign up for Write Awhile,
you make the decision to believe in your writing
and to continue producing new work
because that is your dream
and you are committed to realizing it.
Seasoned writers often talk about rejection as a stumbling block that serious writers don’t let get in their way, as if brilliance must come paired with persistence or it isn’t real brilliance. The reality, however, is that everyday the world is shortchanged of marvelous, as-yet-unwritten creations simply because their authors’ confidence was blighted before it could mature into persistence.
Many brilliant writers lack the confidence to keep writing after their work is rejected for the 10th, 20th, 100th, 300th time. They receive harsh feedback or—worse—none at all. They have high aspirations but too few friends or family members cheering them on, checking in on their latest project, reminding them that they are worthy. A little goes a long way in this regard.
Write Awhile was born after I developed a new relationship to my writing, one based on simple, frequent acts of persistence rather than elaborate, sporadic forms of insistence. By replacing cut and dried expectations with a fluid, supportive expectancy, it became easy to set time aside for acts of imagination. I founded Write Awhile because writers' dreams deserve to be recognized, encouraged, believed in, protected, celebrated, and, ultimately, lived.
From one writer to another, you are worthy of your ambitions and of a ritual, non-negotiable writing practice. If you are someone who could use reminding of this. If you have internalized all the "don't"s or if perfectionism has you second-guessing too much enjoyment out of the journey, I invite you to join the Write Awhile community.
In addition to being strong, swift, and elegant, camels are incredibly resilient. They thrive in environments too arid for most other mammals and can go long periods without food and water. And although we writers need plenty of food and water throughout the day, our fragile egos could learn a thing or two from the camel's example.
As creatives, we often go months without reassurance or validation of any kind. We face challenging stretches of silence, rejection, uncertainty. And like the camel, we must draw strength from within to keep on trekking, dreaming, plotting, and writing our way forward, whatever the current outlook or landscape. If we don't, we risk giving up on a source of deep meaning and joy in our lives. Camels are champions of persistence, and cultivating persistence is what Write Awhile sessions are all about.

Hi, I'm Bridget—writer, educator, and founder of Write Awhile. My camel trek includes a Masters in Creative Writing from University College Cork, sundry works published in Canada, the US, and Ireland, and over 12 years of teaching writing. I am excited to help you cultivate your persistence and to make a ritual of your creative practice.
(Also, in case you're wondering why I chose to stand in front of a stone wall for this photo, it's because I love metaphors and this particular one I built myself—with Persistence, one stone at a time.)
